September 2023—Vol. 27, no. 1 JMTA Meeting and Welcome Back Potluck Luncheon at Keyboard Connection & Zoom: Thursday, September 14, 2023: 9:30am meeting and Potluck afterwards Please email Sandy Stewart at [email protected] with the dish you will bring. Thank you! _____________________________________________________________________________ President’s Pen Dear Colleagues, It is an honor to be able to serve as your new president! If you have any questions at any time, please feel free to contact me at [email protected]. I was looking back at the history of our local music teacher association. It was organized over a hundred years ago, in 1918. It states on our JAXMTA website that our student recitals began in 1927: “Founded on an idea brought from Kansas City by Aurelia Jones Baker, our Association has sponsored the Music Rally program, now called Student Recitals…” (jaxmta.org/about). We currently have three JMTA student recitals each year, plus a community recital for advanced students. In addition, I did not know that the FSMTA began in Jacksonville! According to the FMTA website, “interest in establishing an association of Florida music teachers began in 1918, when Mrs. M.B. Byrd sought to enlist her fellow teachers in a state organization” (fmta.org/history). They were looking to establish high school credit for music study that would be accrued under private music teachers. Not much came of it for 14 years, until: In 1932, the then-president of the Jacksonville MTA, Mrs. Lloyd Jones, revived the idea by appointing a committee to study the advisability of forming a state MTA; Mrs. Byrd was named chairman. After an abortive attempt in 1933, an organizational meeting was held in Jacksonville in March, 1934, the Florida State Music Teachers Association was founded with over a hundred members, and Mrs. Byrd was elected president. Our District 4 Student Day is part of the state-wide annual Student Day program, which was established in 1966. “A music-education committee has served a liaison function with the public schools since 1941. The activity of that committee culminates in an annual Student Day, which includes examinations in performance and theory and a student honors recital.” Another interesting historical fact is that the MTNA, the umbrella over FSMTA and JMTA, was founded in 1876, and is the oldest music teacher association in the U.S. Its headquarters are in Cincinnati, Ohio, and it has 20,000 members! (mtna.org/MTNA/Explore MTNA/Officer Bios/Gary L.Ingle) I hope you have enjoyed this historical journey back through time. I hope to see you at this month’s meeting, where we will be voting on the budget and announcing the programs for the upcoming year, and the potluck luncheon afterwards, held on Thursday, September 14th. Now is a good time to be working on the written and aural theory to prepare students. Though Student Day is known for being comprehensive, starting students in the early levels helps build a foundation that makes it easier to level up each year. Student Day levels go from Primary through 12. This month let’s look at Level 1 written theory. This level covers five sections: scales, intervals, note reading, rhythm, and terms & symbols. Students need to know the formula of a major scale, and to number each note and be able to mark the half steps. For intervals, they need to know half and whole steps, as well as 2nd and 3rd intervals. They need to be able to name the notes, lines, and spaces, of the Grand Staff. For rhythm, they need to know the different notes and rests. There are also terms and symbols they need to know. You can go to FMTA.org, click on Student Activities, FSMTA NonCompetitive Events, and go down to the Members of FSMTA to put in the password, and choose your level to print off. The level one written theory description is shown on the left. For a consumable written theory workbook for your student (as well as keyboard skills and an aural theory USB flash drive) that follows exactly what is needed for that level of Student Day, you can order the packet (around $21) from Music Masters through email: [email protected]. Their phone number is (954) 752-2856. - Angie Holt, District IV Student Activities Chair ([email protected]) ________________________________________________________________________ Over Coffee With . . . Residents of Duval county, if they have a Jacksonville Library card, can use the many electronic resources from the https://jaxpubliclibrary.org/digital-library. Getting a library card is free. All that's needed is your driver's license and sign up in person at any of the 21 branches. The card allows the use of Kanopy - which has free streaming movies, documentaries, educational resources [older teens/adults]. I saw a documentary "Making the Grade" which profiled Irish students and piano teachers whose students are preparing to take the Irish Royal Academy of Music Examinations. It was funny, moving, informative, and relatable, especially seeing snippets of the teacher's lessons in action and how the students feel about piano and their teachers overall. I highly recommend members watch it (and explore the other resources available from JPL)! - JohnWillard Utuk _________________________________________________________________________________ Find A Teacher Section on Jaxmta.org Teachers, please take a moment to check out your information on our Find a Teacher page of the JMTA website (jaxmta.org).
