Per our website: “These awards are given to deserving 9th and 12th grade students in recognition of their leadership, achievements, and service to the community in the field of music. The applicants must also be students in good standing with their music instructor, a member of JMTA who recommends them for this award.” How does this work? “Ninth graders apply for the Local and District President's Community Service Award and may count their music activities from summer before seventh grade through fall of ninth grade. Twelfth graders apply for the FSMTA Community Service Award for 12th Graders and may count their music activities from spring of ninth grade through fall of twelfth grade. Prospective applicants are encouraged to keep a journal of their music participation so they can document their community music involvement in ninth and twelfth grades when they are ready to apply for the Community Service Award.” What happens if they win? “Winning at the county level, the student receives a certificate and a plaque, which is an honor that can be placed on future college or employment applications. The ninth grade state winner receives a plaque and $100.00, while the twelfth grade state winner also receives a plaque and $500.00.” Go to https://www.jaxmta.org/community-service-award.html for more information and for the application links. The application deadline is December 31st. Contact Joan Cordell, Chair, at [email protected] if you have any questions. DISTRICT IV NEWS Student Day 2025 District IV Student Day is scheduled for Saturday, March 8, 2025, at Mandarin Baptist Church, 11244 San Jose Blvd., 32223. What is Student Day? It is an annual evaluation held in the spring semester each year. The student can choose to attend the morning or afternoon session. It is comprised of four events, three of which are graded. The written theory test, aural theory test, and audition before the judge (where they play their pieces and keyboard skills) are graded, and the group recital performance is not. How many pieces do they play in the judge audition? For levels primary and one, two memorized pieces from different composers, and for levels two through twelve, three memorized pieces (and beginning with level five, from different musical periods). What is the cost for Student Day? Individual student fees are $30 for all levels, plus $15 for the teacher’s breakfast and boxed lunch that day. Student Day guidelines may be found on the fmta.org website, under Student Activities and FSMTA Non-Competitive Events, for sample tests, guidelines, suggested repertoire, and other materials. The Student Day Handbook may also be of help. Also, an independent teacher has created a curriculum to help you prepare your students for the keyboard skills, written, and aural theory testing with helpful workbooks for each level. To order, email Sue Colvert (Music Masters) at [email protected]. Her phone number is 954-752-2856. Michael Scott Giuliani Hanh Ngoc Nguyen Emily Stewart Over Coffee With . . . Julie Hamby We are sitting down with a long-time JMTA member this month. Thank you, Julie, for sharing with us! Q. Please tell us a little bit about yourself. A. The beginning and current stage of my music journey may be similar to many other music teachers…but not the middle part. I was born near Chicago, Illinois, and moved to Albany, Georgia when I was 6. My mother was a piano and organ teacher, and my dad loved to sing and play guitar. There was always music in the house, whether from my mom practicing or teaching lessons, or playing records. I have two older sisters, and naturally my mom taught us all to play the piano. When I was in elementary school, my dad bought a music store and thus began the journey into the band programs with violin, clarinet, flute, and saxophone. All my jobs in high school were taught to me by my parents – how to run a music store, how to teach piano lessons, and how to play for a church. This was instrumental in shaping my ideas for a future career. Even though I played in judged competitions every year for over 10 years, when it was time to decide on college and a profession, a music career was not the primary path I wanted to take, nor was staying in Georgia. I wanted to pursue accounting, with a minor in music. The problem with that – the cost of out-of-state college. Fortunately, one of the piano competition judges, Professor Eugene Hudson, recruited me to Jacksonville University with piano and academic scholarships. To receive the maximum piano scholarships, I declared a double major in Piano Performance and Accounting. Many told me I would be in college forever – it could easily take 7 years. That did not seem appealing, so I got waivers to take 20 credit hour semesters, took summer classes at my local junior college, taught lessons and played at a local church. After 5 years of nonstop classes, I graduated valedictorian of my class with almost no debt, married my high school sweetheart (who lived in Georgia all that time) and started working for a national public accounting firm here in Jacksonville. Not the usual path for music teachers! Q. What inspired you to begin music lessons? A. Music was a part of daily life in my household. My mom had a firm policy on when to start children with lessons, based on age, abilities, and the child’s desire. At the age of 4-5, I would sit beside the piano and organ while my mom played and beg her to let me start lessons. I didn’t meet the age requirement, but my persistence finally won her over. Q. Did you have a favorite music teacher(s) that made music more enjoyable? A. There were several band and orchestra teachers, but only my mom and college professor as piano teachers. The benefits of having my mom as my teacher and my dad as a music store owner meant I had access to an in-home music studio full of books, records, and electronic instruments. When she passed away, I inherited over 12 deep filing cabinets full of music. Going through it all brings back wonderful memories of songs I played, or tried to play, and songs I heard my mom play over and over. Q. Tell us about some things you have been/are involved in musically. A. After college, I got my CPA license and it became my full-time profession for 30 years. During this time, I also filled in at church every now and then and maintained a small piano studio. I taught both of my sons piano lessons for 10 years. Both are still active in music, being playing keys, guitar or drums for church or other events. My oldest son is now a professional drummer here in Jacksonville, teaching drums (and piano), recording, and playing with various bands locally and in the Southeast. I recently “retired” from my accounting career in order to enjoy my musical career. Now there is more time to play the piano and add more piano students. Having the different careers has given me an increased appreciation for music at this stage and a different perspective on teaching. Also, it is exciting to share teaching stories with my son, as it has opened me up to new and exciting teaching ideas. Q. Do you have a story of something that happened during one of your performances and how you handled it? A. In high school, there was a competition an hour away that involved a solo and duet piece. The morning of the competition, I was in a lot pain, but was determined to go anyway. There was a lot of practice involved in preparing for this day, and I was not about to waste that or let my partner down. Instead of riding the bus with the group from school, my dad drove me while I laid down in the front seat. As soon as I finished playing, we drove home and he ended up taking me to the hospital. I had to have immediate surgery! But the good news, Superiors marks were received on both my solo and duet! Q. What advice would you give to help focus before a performance and curb nerves? A. Practice, memorization, visualization, and deep breaths are the best ways I have found to prepare for a performance. With practice, it is important to start from different spots in the music, so that if students get lost during the performance, they do not have to start from the beginning. If you can visualize your performance in the setting, then the real performance feels more comfortable, not like the first time. Q. Where is one of the most interesting places you’ve visited? A. I have not traveled much, but when I do travel, I like to visit the beautiful churches in the area. Whether it’s New York City or Omaha, Nebraska, I enjoy the architecture, stained glass windows, and the amazing organ acoustics. Q. What do you find to be a challenge in teaching music and what do you find that helps? A. I find it hard to believe that my studio right now has all males…from ages 6 to 75, and a wait list of more boys! Seriously, where are all the girls? I guess raising two boys prepared me for this, and I love it. A real challenge is holding kids attention and competing with all their extracurricular activities. In my studio, I’ll initiate physical movement like standing, dancing, high-fiving in order to provide mental breaks. Also, there is an incentive program that allows kids to get up and select marbles to add to their assigned tube. The kids enjoy seeing their tubes fill up, along with the other students, and are motivated to reach the top to pick a prize. Of course, this does not apply to my adult students. Q. Who are some of your favorite music composers? A. There is a wide range, so will speak to Liszt that I am enjoying playing right now alongside one of my students. I recently started exploring jazz and blues in more depth, something that I didn’t have much time for in the earlier years. I am enjoying finding correlations from some of Liszt’s chord structures and cadenzas to that used in jazz pieces. The card allows the use of Kanopy - which has free streaming movies, documentaries, educational resources [older teens/adults]. I saw a documentary "Making the Grade" which profiled Irish students and piano teachers whose students are preparing to take the Irish Royal Academy of Music Examinations. It was funny, moving, informative, and relatable, especially seeing snippets of the teacher's lessons in action and how the students feel about piano and their teachers overall. I highly recommend members watch it (and explore the other resources available from JPL)! - JohnWillard Utuk Need a Sponsor? Does anyone in the JMTA need a sponsor or need help in any way?
