October 2023—Vol. 27, no. 2 JMTA Meeting and Program at Keyboard Connection & over Zoom Thursday, October 12, 2023: 9:30am meeting and program afterwards: “Practicing Strategies for Music Students” with Dr. Michael Bovenzi, UNF Associate Professor _____________________________________________________________________________ President’s Pen Dear Colleagues, I was perusing the October/November issue of American Music Teacher magazine and came across “Beyond DrumBeats and Open Fifths: Indigenous Compositions of the Americas for the Piano Studio” by Mercer, Lazarus and Ruby. The article describes accurately, as I’m sure you’ll agree, some pieces in many of our method books that have “drumbeats” as 5th intervals in one hand and the “Indian” sound of the melody in the other, all appropriated by those who are not Native American. “Contrary to popular opinion, most American Indigenous composers do not create music using the open fifth interval to emulate drums, since the piano is not a traditional instrument for ceremonial purposes.” Indigenous composers of the Americas, as they are named, write music using “all manner of instrumentation, genre and style, ranging from classical to hip-hop to convey their ideas and honor their identity.” The article features Indigenous composers, displaying some of their music. One of them is Connor Chee, Navajo pianist and composer, whose Sandpaintings for Piano was commissioned in 2021. Though it can be hard to find some of the music, the article has a list of resources where some can be found. Compositions by Connor Chee can be found at https://www.connorchee.com. JMTA Potluck - Submitted by Stefanie Batson-Martin, Recording Secretary _____________________________________________________________________________ JMTA TREASURY REPORTS August and September Submitted by Stef & Damon Martin 10/02/2023 ____________________________________________________________________________ JMTA MONTHLY PROGRAMS OCTOBER JMTA Meeting and Program Our October meeting will be on Thursday, October 12 at 9:30am at Keyboard Connection, 9912 San Jose Blvd. Following the meeting, Dr. Michael Bovenzi, Associate Professor, Saxophone and Area Coordinator, Music Theory will be with us to present a program on: “Practicing Strategies for Music Students” About Dr. Bovenzi: “Dr. Michael Bovenzi teaches saxophone and serves as an instructor in music theory, computer music applications, woodwind courses and chamber music at the University of North Florida. He holds the position of Associate Professor. Dr. Bovenzi has performed in Bangkok, Thailand, at Mahidol University for the 15th meeting of the World Saxophone Congress. He also hosted the 2011 Region 6 conference for NASA at the University of North Florida. Recent performances included premiering works at the NASA Biennial Conference in Tempe, Arizona, and at World Saxophone Congress XVI in St. Andrews, Scotland. Dr. Bovenzi holds the Doctorate in Performance and Literature from the University of Illinois, Urbana-Champaign, with a minor in music theory. Student Day levels go from Primary through 12. This month let’s look at Level 2 written and aural theory. This level covers six sections in written theory: key signatures, scales, intervals, note reading, rhythm, and terms & symbols. Students need to know the order of the sharps and flats, the scales of G and D Major, all about 3rd and 5th intervals, reading notes on both staffs including the upper and lower ledger notes of C, and writing rhythm patterns with different time signatures. There are also terms and symbols they need to know. In Level 2 aural theory, students identify major and minor scales, major 2nd and 3rd intervals, as well as tonality, rhythm, melody, dynamics, and touch. You can go to FMTA.org, click on Student Activities, FSMTA NonCompetitive Events, and go down to the Members of FSMTA to put in the password (new password this month which has been emailed to you from FSMTA), and choose your level to print off. (Page one of the level two written theory description is shown above left, and the level two aural theory description is above right.) For a consumable written theory workbook for your student, as well as keyboard skills helps and an aural theory USB flash drive that follows exactly what is needed for that level of Student Day, you can order the packet (around $21) from Music Masters through email: [email protected]. I saw a documentary "Making the Grade" which profiled Irish students and piano teachers whose students are preparing to take the Irish Royal Academy of Music Examinations. It was funny, moving, informative, and relatable, especially seeing snippets of the teacher's lessons in action and how the students feel about piano and their teachers overall.
