JMTA High Notes
October 2024 —Vol. 28, no. 2 The JMTA meeting and program for October, held at Keyboard Connection & over Zoom, were canceled due to Hurricane Milton ________________________________________________________________________ President’s Pen Dear Colleagues, As you know, membership with MTNA (and thus FSMTA and JMTA) includes multiple benefits for us when we join. These include the following, as displayed on the FSMTA website at this link: https://www.mtna.org//MTNA/JoinandRenew/membership/Member_Discounts.aspx You can control+click on each one of these to go to each section of discounts. Business Online Counseling & Therapy Services Publications and Products Studio Management Services Hotels and Car Rentals Auto Repair In addition, member benefits include various types of insurance: https://www.mtna.org/MTNA/JoinRenew/Member_Benefits/Member_Insurance/MTNA/JoinAndRenew/Membership/Member_Insurance.aspx?hkey=89ebec92-5ec5-4451-8e57-a6c1bc23863b What might other reasons be for joining our music teacher associations? MTNA’s new CEO, Brian Shepard, addresses this question in his Dear Reader column in the latest American Music Teacher magazine. Entitled The Power of Community, Shepard describes the warm sense of belonging we feel when joining a group where we can relax and feel included, being a part of “something that’s bigger than us—a place where we can be ourselves, share our knowledge and feel valued, while at the same time learning from others.” Joining or renewing your membership in music teacher associations can help us feel like we have the support of the whole group as we teach. Shepard shared that “the studio music teaching profession can often feel isolating, so involvement in the local, state and national communities that MTNA offers is more important now than ever before.” He calls on us to not only “reach out” and welcome new colleagues, but to try to attend local meetings and to volunteer for a position on the board or a committee. With all of us working together, it benefits not only each of us, but our associations as a whole. We hope you will be able to join us at our upcoming meetings / programs, as well as student opportunities throughout the year! Sincerely, Angie Angie Holt, President Shepard, Brian. “The Power of Community.” American Music Teacher, 2024, p. 2. ________________________________________________________________________ Welcome New Members! Michael Giuliani We are getting to know one of our new members this month. Thank you, Michael, for sharing with us! Q. Please tell us a little bit about yourself. A. I was born in Southern California, and moved to the Upper Peninsula of Michigan when I was nine years old. When I graduated high school, I moved to Chicago to attend North Park University for undergraduate studies (piano performance), then Concordia University for my Master's degree (church music and organ). I met my wife, Agnes, in Nashville while touring with Tim Zimmerman and The King's Brass--she's a violinist, and we were playing the same concert. We married a year later, and now have four beautiful children. We moved to St. Augustine three years ago so I could take the Director of Music position at Trinity Parish in downtown St. Augustine. Q. What inspired you to begin music lessons? A. My grandmother! I had always "tinkered" at the piano, but she decided that I was going to take formal piano lessons when I was nine years old. Q. Did you have a favorite music teacher(s) that made music more enjoyable? A. My very first piano teacher, Yvonne Crocken, made learning so enjoyable and was easy to talk to. I later studied with Frances Wirtanen, who became a mentor to me during my high school years; she's the reason I chose to pursue music as a career. During my undergraduate years, I studied with Terree Shofner-Emrich. She gave me the push I needed to "get my act together" (I was the typical undergrad student, lost in the wind). I've studied with other teachers, but these three made the biggest impact on me and instilled a love for music. Q. Tell us about some things you have been/are involved in musically. A. My "main job" throughout the years has been in churches, but I have worked extensively as a vocal collaborative pianist. During the few years I lived in Charleston, South Carolina I held staff pianist positions at Charleston Southern University, the Charleston Symphony Orchestra Gospel Choir and Spiritual Ensemble, and did some work with the Taylor Festival Choir. After moving back to Chicago for my Master's, I became the pianist for the St. Charles Singers, Young Naperville Singers, and North Central College, and did quite a bit of work with other area choirs and vocalists. Since moving to St. Augustine, I have started working for the Jacksonville Symphony Orchestra as the chorus pianist, and frequently collaborate with musicians at the Amelia Island Opera, First Coast Opera, Jacksonville Children's Chorus, and University of North Florida. In addition to performance, teaching others has always been a passion of mine. I started teaching beginners in my hometown of Crystal Falls, Michigan while I was still in high school. When I lived in Chicago, I started a community music school through our church that at one point served around 600 students. Here in St. Augustine, my wife and I have launched the Young Artist Music Project with the goal of being the most comprehensive music training for children and youth in St. Johns County. Q. Do you have a story of something that happened during one of your performances and how you handled it? A. Not as a pianist--I've always shrugged those off and kept playing. BUT...during my freshman year of college, I turned pages for Elizabeth Buccheri. She was accompanying Nicole Cabell, who had just won BBC Cardiff Singer of the World Competition, and the crowd was packed in. During some crazy Spanish piece, with an insane piano part, I lost track of where we were and was relying on Betty's cue to turn the page. Upon one of her head nods, I turned the page...but it turned out that wasn't my cue. She was just really into the piece! Her response was to yell "no!" mid-performance as she reached up to yank the page back. I was petrified! I handled that one by always trying to pawn off the page turning job to somebody else. Q. What advice would you give to help focus before a performance and curb nerves? A. My best advice is to be a perfectionist when you're practicing, but when the performance comes just relax and enjoy. Learn to be ok with making mistakes. They happen, and it really is ok! Trust in your preparation, keep moving forward, and enjoy the performance. Q. Where is one of the most interesting places you’ve visited? A. Krakow, Poland. Nothing "interesting" stands out, but it is certainly one of the most beautiful cities that I've visited. Q. What do you find to be a challenge in teaching music and what do you find that helps? A. I feel like diversity in learning styles has increased substantially over the past decade. Perhaps that's just an awareness that has come with age and experience, but I find that I have to adapt my teaching more often these days. I find help by reading research on pedagogy and neurodiverse learners, and by discussing with colleagues. Q. Who are some of your favorite music composers? A. Bach, Beethoven, Rachmaninoff, Debussy, Kapustin ________________________________________________________________________ AREA CONCERTS AND RECITALS Community Hospice Performances If you would be interested in performing a recital at the Hadlow Center at the Community Hospice and Pallative Care on Sunbeam Road, they sponsor a monthly performance titled First Friday Recital Series, with performances starting at 11:30 a.m. If you are interested, please contact Dr. Sandra Stewart at 904-333-9280. Residents of Duval county, if they have a Jacksonville Library card, can use the many electronic resources from the https://jaxpubliclibrary.org/digital-library. Getting a library card is free. All that's needed is your driver's license and sign up in person at any of the 21 branches. The card allows the use of Kanopy - which has free streaming movies, documentaries, educational resources [older teens/adults]. I saw a documentary "Making the Grade" which profiled Irish students and piano teachers whose students are preparing to take the Irish Royal Academy of Music Examinations. It was funny, moving, informative, and relatable, especially seeing snippets of the teacher's lessons in action and how the students feel about piano and their teachers overall. I highly recommend members watch it (and explore the other resources available from JPL)! - JohnWillard Utuk ________________________________________________________________________ Need a Sponsor?
