JMTA General Meeting
President’s Pen Dear Music Colleagues, What an informative meeting we had in February with Dr. Jonathan Reed. His presentation about “Musical Interpolation” was riveting. I especially appreciate the hand-outs that he gave us. Leaving us with something for reference is always a plus. This month, we will have an exciting presentation by Sandra Palmer on March 14, at our general meeting at Keyboard Connection. Be sure to attend. For other music events, read this newsletter to the end. JMTA offers so many opportunities for your students to expand their music horizons. Take advantage of as many as possible. JMTA is still in need of an ethics person and a historian. No one has volunteered for either of those positions. Please know that if you can help your music organization, that is a plus for you, a learning experience and a chance to make JMTA even better and more relevant to you as a teacher. Being involved gives you more insight into the workings and possibilities of your organization. Since this is the month of St. Patrick, I leave you with this Irish blessing: May the road rise up to meet you. May the wind be always at your back. May the sun shine warm upon your face; the rains fall soft upon your fields and until we meet again, may God hold you in the palm of His hand. See you at the March meeting. JMTA Member’s Edition of Composer’s Lost Manuscript Published 100 Years Later JMTA member Dr. Scott Watkins, Associate Professor of Music at Jacksonville University, had his edition of American composer Howard Hanson’s solo piano work, “Symphonic Rhapsody, Op. 14,” published by Carl Fischer in December. Dr. Watkins discovered the unpublished manuscript of the work while conducting research in May, 2016, at the Eastman School of Music for his upcoming book on Hanson’s life and work in California. Watkins has been active giving lectures and performances of the work since last April when he introduced the work in Vancouver. He has also lectured on and performed the work in September at Texas Christian University, and this past October he repeated the lecture/performance at the College Music Society’s National Conference in San Antonio. Dr. Watkins will perform the work at Jacksonville University March 6 on a program which replicates the October, 1919 concert in San Jose, California, at the College of the Pacific when Hanson himself played his “Symphonic Rhapsody” for the first time. Here is the link to the Hanson piece on the Carl Fischer website: Jacksonville University’s news magazine, The Wave, published a story on the work and its discovery. The story can be seen here. ________________________________________________________________________ Last chance to find that picture of you with the crazy hairdo from 1992! The March meeting will be the last meeting at which the JMTA scrapbooks will be available to sort through and take home whatever you like. All photos and scrapbooks can be viewed forevermore on the Local Archives page of the state website, fmta.org. ________________________________________________________________________ Need a Sponsor? Does anyone in the JMTA need a sponsor or need help in any way? If so, John Scott, owner of Great Scott Music School, is interested in helping our organization. Is there some you think you’ll never use? Let’s have a music exchange! Bring your unwanted music to any JMTA meeting. Bring home something new to you! Look for the “Free Music” spot. Music does not have to be brand new. ________________________________________________________________________ Have you found us on Facebook?
