General Meeting and Program

The April 13 meeting will be held at Riverside Presbyterian Church in Riverside. We will have possibly five students performing for us, the scholarship winner and the concerto winners. These are students of Mary Lou Krosnick, Kamila Shahtakhtinski and Vickie Stake. Please join us for this special program featuring our talented students.

President’s Pen
Can it be possible there are only two more JMTA gatherings during this school year for meetings and presentations? How time flies. I look forward to seeing you on Wed, April 13 at Riverside Presbyterian Church for our next event. The meeting will include hearing a report from the nominating committee, election of officers for the 2016-2017 term, report on the Community Service recital and other committee volunteers who serve you and your students. The program is very special in that we have the chance to hear our student winners for this year perform. Find a complete list of these students in this issue of the High Notes. Hearing and meeting the Senior Scholarship, Junior, Intermediate and Senior Piano Concerto winners is always a treat.

If you have never attended the FSMTA Competitive events day, schedule it now on your calendar for Saturday, May 14. This year the event which travels around the state will be held on the campus of Jacksonville University making it easy for you to attend. Not only will our District Piano Concerto winners be competing that day but you can hear the competitions of 1st or 2nd year collegiate pianists in the Gray Perry Collegiate piano competition, piano duo or duet entries in both the Byrd Pre-college and College Piano Ensemble competition, Pre-College Chamber music, Guitar students (pre-college and college) and other instruments in the State Concerto competition.

One other reminder, shortly you should receive a notice regarding renewal of your MTNA/FSMTA/JMTA membership. Please plan to complete this renewal as soon as possible as the end of the fiscal year is June 30. You don’t want to let all of the special benefits you receive as a member lapse even for one day. If you know of a teacher who might be interested in joining the organization, it is now possible for them to begin the process to do so online at www.fmta.org. See you soon.

• There is a new way to electronically transfer membership on our state’s website. Two members are transferring in and one is planning to join. Barbara Polomsky is transferring into JMTA. Ansel Audain is rejoining the group. Anita Renfroe is retiring from her professorship, moving to the Fernandina area, and joining our organization. Welcome to all!

• April 13, 2016- Scholarship winners and Concerto competition winners will perform for us at Riverside Presbyterian Church.
  
• May 11, 2016- St. John’s Cathedral for a potluck lunch. JohnWillard Utuk is going to perform some of his master’s recital for us.

• Sandra Stewart is bringing pastries and Lindsay Hardee will take care of fruit for April’s meeting.
  
• In May, everyone will donate for meat. An email will come for all to sign up to bring sides.

Student Recital: Sandra Stewart

• 22 students, 10 teachers participated in the last recital at Deermeadows Baptist Church, which was a big success.
  
• We need to find a new church for the Student Day Honor’s Recital because Christian Family Chapel’s setup has changed.
  
• We will research the downtown the Public Library as Lorraine Eaton’s husband is connected with that institution.
  
• If you have any suggestions as to performance venues, please contact Sandy Stewart.

Senior Scholarships: Kamila Shahtahktinski

• The scholarship audition went well at Northeast Florida Conservatory. Two applicants: Noah Stone and Cassia Wang. 3 judges: Erin Bennett, Jerry Gilmore, Jeannie Rose. Both students performed very well, but Cassia Wang won the scholarship. Hopefully, Cassia will be attending Rice University in the Fall. She will be presented with the check at Riverside Presbyterian Church at April’s meeting.

Summer Music Camp Application: Kamila Shahtakhtinski

• If you have students that need help funding pre-college summer music camps, the application deadline is March 26, 2016. Committee for reviewing the applications: Sandra Stewart and Kamila Shahtakhtinski.

District IV: Lorraine Eaton

• Members’ Recital: April 17, 2016 at 6:00 pm at All Saint’s Episcopal Church. There are five performers so far, but we need more performers for a full recital. Deadline application is April 1, 2016. All are welcome and invited to come.
  
• District Concerto: Sunday, March 13, 2016 from 2-5 pm at UNF. 5 competitors.

Student Day: Denise Homsley

• Members need to pick up their tests from keyboard connection. The certificate and medals will be distributed at the May meeting.

Unfinished Business:

• At the next meeting in April, we will announce the officers for the coming term.
  
• The May meeting the officers will be officially installed.
  
• We need someone to take over programs and piano festival chairs.

DISTRICT IV CONCERTO COMPETITION WINNERS
Junior Division (Piano)

• Winner: Katie Carlson (student of Mary Lou Krosnick) – Hummel, Concertino, mvt. 3

Intermediate Division (Piano)

Winners will advance to the state competition, which this year will be held locally at Jacksonville University on May 13-14 with the other state competitive events.

DISTRICT IV MEMBER’S RECITAL

• If you are interested in performing at the District IV Member’s Recital, please send your repertoire and performance time to: Michael Mastronicola, [email protected]
  
• Deadline is April 1st. Call or email 904-402-6480 with questions.
  
• The recital will be presented as part of All Saints Episcopal Church’s Music Through the Ages Concert Series on Sunday, April 17, at 6 pm.
  
• Location is 4171 Hendricks Avenue, Jacksonville, FL 32207.
  
• Admission is free.
  
• A reception organized by the church will follow in the Parish Hall, but members are asked to bring a dish (brownies, crackers & cheese, etc) if able to assist. Details will be sent to members in the weeks before the recital for a sign-up.
  
• All members are expected to share postings and invites to this recital to friends and their studios.
  
• The recital will last no more than 80 minutes, no intermission. Performers must be District IV members in good standing.
  
• Performances should be of high quality, and consist of solo piano rep and collaborative repertoire. If you plan to perform with another person, please plan to visit the performance space and figure out logistics beforehand. The performance space is tight!
  
• Selections must be under 10 minutes (shorter pieces are welcome!), allowing for a minimum of 8 performers; more may perform based on repertoire length. 10 minutes is an absolute maximum!
  
• The piano, a Yamaha 6’11” grand, is currently in the rear of the sanctuary; it will be moved to the front of the sanctuary that afternoon. Because of this, there will not be warm-up time before April 17th. Warm-up time is available from 3-5 pm, 10-15 minutes per performer.
  
• Let Michael know your preference if you would like a time slot that Sunday. An offering plate will be at the welcome table.
  
• Half the offering will go to the Music Fund at the church to assist with ongoing Concert Series costs; half will be donated to District IV JMTA. Performers will be included on a “first response” basis.

Proton Therapy Recital
It’s April, so the student recital at the Proton Therapy Institute is coming soon! The date is Tuesday, April 12 at 6:00-7:30 p.m. Please have your Intermediate and advanced level students perform. The Institute is located at 2015 N. Jefferson Street in downtown Jacksonville. We perform as part of their music series. They have a wonderful grand piano and a beautiful setting for our performance. We perform for the patients and the staff.

Please send the following information to Sandy Stewart, [email protected] by April 8: student name, age and level, title and composer, and the timing of the piece(s). Each student may perform one or two pieces of their choice.
