President’s Pen
Dear Music Colleagues,

A Happy Easter to you all! Spring is a time of new beginnings. A time to reward our students for their progress throughout the school year. Also a time to begin to plan that much-needed vacation and/or workshop to stimulate our own creativity for the next year.

Speaking of creativity; our March program “Measure Your Treasure” by Sandra Palmer was full of new idea-gems to motivate and encourage our students. I can just picture Dr. Palmer’s studio being a fun place to learn music. We appreciate her presentation.

Our next meeting will be at Keyboard Connection on Wednesday, April 11th at 9:30. Come early to meet and greet. At our business meeting, we will address the confusion about the amount to pay outside presenters and the use of the Warren Fund. Be sure to attend to make your voice heard.

Our program will be the much-anticipated review of the selections for the November Multi-Piano Festival. This is one of the premier programs of JMTA. I encourage every teacher to enroll their studio in the Festival. It is a unique experience – a piano “orchestra.” My students look forward to it. They are already asking about music for the Multi-Piano Program.

Another student performance opportunity is the JMTA Proton Therapy Community Recital, featuring intermediate and advanced students on Tuesday, April 10th at 6:00. The audience is always so appreciative and the Therapy Center provides refreshments. What a wonderful chance to let others enjoy our students’ music! Even if you don’t have participants, come and support the performers.

Meeting called to order by Sandra Roberts at 9:35a.
Minutes from general meeting February 2018 were read and approved.
Treasurer’s report was submitted.
Committee Reports:

• Altruistic-Denise Homsley: Sandra Roberts suggested individual members might like to send “thinking of you” cards to Sandra Stewart and her dog Bones.
• Multi Piano Festival-Anita Renfroe: Anita brought a sign-up sheet for members to play duet examples at next meeting. Event is scheduled for Saturday, November 10, 2018, at UNF, tentatively at Robinson Theater. A deposit has not yet been put down.
• Programs- Anita Renfroe: Today’s program is by Tallahassee member Sandra Palmer, “Measure your Treasure.” It included fun teaching tips. April program is MPF music preview. May program is concerto winners. All programs are at Keyboard Connection.
• Recitals: The remaining recital for the school year is at the Proton Therapy Institute on April 10, 2018, at 6:00p.

Old Business:

• Committee Chairs needed for Ethics and Historian.
• Sandra urged all members to be in attendance at the April meeting where presenter reimbursement fees will be discussed.

New Business:

• E3 is a Jacksonville group that presents workshops to help small business owners and entrepreneurs. Lorraine will look into the possibility of them presenting to us on a future program.
• Jax Makerspace is a public space available at the Main Library downtown, for possibly music programs. You would need to provide your own instruments.
• Concerto Competition is scheduled for March 24, 2018, at 1:15p in the UNF Recital Hall. 10 participants in the areas of piano and strings are scheduled to perform.
• MTNA National Conference will be held this weekend in Orlando. Erin Bennett is giving a presentation, and is open to presenting it to JMTA at a future program. Her workshop covers how to transition students out of method books into classical sonatas and sonatinas.

JMTA Proton Therapy Recital

• On Tuesday, April 10, JMTA will hold a community recital at the Proton Therapy Institute for the patients and staff at 6 p.m. It is located at 2015 N. Jefferson Street, downtown. This recital is for intermediate and advanced students only. Each student may perform one or two selections. The Institute provides food for the event.
• Send all information to Sandy Stewart at [email protected] by April 3. Students will receive community service hours for participating.

District IV Concerto Competition

• The FSMTA District IV Concerto Competition was held on Saturday, March 24, 2018 in the UNF Recital Hall. We had 10 students competing across 6 competitions.
• FSMTA District IV Concerto Competition Results:

• The winners will perform at our May 9th JMTA Meeting at Keyboard Connection. Please come out to hear them play!
• Winners will also compete at the State Competitive Events, to be held at Stetson University on Saturday, May 19th.
• Congratulations to the competitors, their teachers, and their families. There were many outstanding performances, and our District has many reasons to be proud of these students!

“Works by Bach and Torelli” Concert Opportunity
On Thursday, April 12, there will be a Lawson Ensemble Concert at 7:30pm in the Recital Hall at UNF. The Lawson Ensemble consists of Dr. Nick Curry, cello, Clinton Dewing, violin and viola, and Aurica Duca, violin. Special guest performers will be Erin Bennett, piano, and Randy Tinnin, trumpet. Free admission.
