This year is filled with enrichment and networking opportunities through our local association and the 2019 Florida State Music Teachers Association Conference, October 17-20 in Gainesville. Prepare to be inspired! The theme is Music Meets Medicine. . Dr. Julie Jaffe Nagel, one of the headliners has advanced degrees in music and psychology. Her expansive background and research support her expertise in dealing with “Performance Anxiety.” I heard her speak at a Pedagogy Conference years ago and she was an impressive clinician who relates to each member of the audience. Check out the conference schedule online to see all of the exciting topics, clinicians and guest artists. Physicians, sports medicine experts and musicians who have worked through injuries will share their findings and recommendations in workshops and panel discussions. Do you need some teaching suggestions for specific problems, some motivational ideas for those sluggish teens or suggestions to overcome stage fright? Then, go to the conference! It’s in our backyard! So, if you cannot go for the full conference…no problem, go for a day. Drive over with another JMTA member. Share student concerns, teaching ideas and much more on your short drive. Closer to home…JMTA’s kick-off event on September 11th will be a Meet & Greet time followed by lunch. We will convene at 10 am for a brief business session and overview of the 2019-2020 Programs. JMTA board members will give a short summary of their job areas so new members can become familiar with JMTA activities. Program Director, Dr. Michael Mastronicola, will provide some background material for upcoming programs. He has lined up an impressive array of local, state and nationally recognized clinicians! You’ll want to hear each one. LUNCH will be a POTLUCK LUNCHEON at Keyboard Connection so plan to bring something yummy to share. Angie Holt will be coordinating lunch. Beverages, plates, napkins and silverware will be provided. There is a niche for each of you in this organization. Not everyone can attend all the meetings but there are so many other activities outside of the meetings that need attention. (Please see the website for more on this topic.) Bring a new or prospective member to experience the joy we share in exchanging ideas and planning rewarding music activities for our students and the community! COMMUNITY SERVICE AWARD The Jacksonville Music Teachers Association participates in the Community Service Awards program. These awards are given to deserving 9th and 12th grade students in recognition of their leadership, achievements, and service to the community in the field of music. The applicants must also be students in good standing with their music instructor, a member of JMTA who recommends them for this award. This award encourages young musicians to use their music talents and skills within their community for the betterment of the community and society as a whole. It also helps them become more responsible and caring citizens as they reach out to others through their music activities. Winning at the county level, the student receives a certificate and a plaque, which is an honor that can be placed on future college or employment applications. The ninth grade state winner receives a plaque and $100, while the twelfth grade state winner also receives a plaque and $500. For more detail, please go to the website. Under competitive events, you will find the application and detailed instructions. You must have all paperwork in to the state chair by December 31st. Please encourage your lower grades to journal all their musical activities and volunteering to make the application process much easier. JMTA Community Service Award Chair, Joan Cordell ____________________________________________________________________ DISTRICT IV NEWS 2020 District IV Student Day Denise Homsley, Mus.M., NCTM, Chair, District IV Student Activities 2020 District IV Student Day will be held on Saturday, February 1, 2020 at First Baptist Church. Student Day guidelines may be found on the fmta.org website. Please remember there are a few changes at each level, so please go over these with your students as they prepare. We look forward to 2020 District IV Student Day! It should be another very successful District Student Day!! _______________________________________________________________ Over Coffee With . . . ANITA RENFROE For our first segment, we are catching up with our new JMTA president, Dr. Anita Renfroe, NCTM, and getting to know her better. Q: First, please tell us a little bit about yourself. A: I was born in St. Vincent’s Hospital in Jacksonville. My father took my brother and I to live with my grandparents in Valdosta, Georgia when I was six weeks old. (My mother was quite ill for years and my father worked on the railroad so I was raised by my grandmother and aunts.) Q: What made you want to start piano lessons as a child and what inspired you to make music your life-long career? A: My grandfather was a butcher but his passion was opera. He was a fine tenor and went to Atlanta once a month to study voice with a pupil of Caruso’s. I remember sitting on his lap at the piano while he would practice his music. He died when I was in Kindergarten, but he made a lasting impression on me. My grandparents had nine children and none of them wanted to study music. I began lessons at age six and never stopped. Q: Who was your favorite music teacher growing up, and why? A: I had a mix of teachers in grades 1-6, but really got lucky when Dr. Webster Teague, who became Chair of the Music Dept. at Valdosta State moved to Valdosta. I studied piano, organ and theory with him from 7th grade through 12th. He was an excellent teacher, and mentor who was very active in MTNA and organized the Valdosta Chapter. He also started a junior affiliate for middle and high school students. He was always positive and ended each lesson with a smile. I had lessons three times a week (Monday, Tuesday and Thursday). Dr. Teague left the theory assignments on the board from his college classes and I would work on those, practice on the Steinway grand or listen to recordings of Wanda Landowska playing Bach until time for my lesson. Dr. Teague encouraged me to be independent not only in musical choices but also in life choices. After those years under his tutelage I felt like I could be successful in any music school. Q: What advice would you give to help focus before a performance and curb nerves? A: Deep breathing, relaxation techniques and gentle stretches really help me to focus. I never play the pieces I will perform from memory on the day of the performance. I play lots of scales and warmups and other things that relax me. I don’t like to chat while backstage – just focus. When I was at FSU, I focused on a spot on the curtain across the stage; unfortunately, they replaced that curtain in between my dress rehearsal and the performance one year. I survived. Q: What would you like to see accomplished during the next few years in JMTA? A: Over the next two years I would like to see JMTA welcome new members from the universities here as well as newcomers to our area. We tend to lose young people after they graduate from college. We need to build a bridge there. As far as newcomers to our area, we need a way to find out about new folks. Perhaps realtors, the chamber of commerce or some other organization could assist with that. I’d also like to see JMTA pursue grant money to support several different aspects of our organization. It takes some work, but the outcomes are worth it. If our community becomes aware of the talent in JMTA and the good things we are trying to accomplish, we may garner some matching funds from local businesses. ____________________________________________________________________ Find A Teacher Section on Jaxmta.org Teachers, Please take a moment to check out your information on our Find a Teacher page.
