President’s Pen
Dear Colleagues:

Our March program by Anita Renfroe was a delightful surprise. After the scheduled presenter was unable to come, Anita filled in with a program of lecture and piano performance. We appreciate her flexibility and willingness to share her skills. Many thanks also to her hubby for helping.

Our next general meeting will be Wednesday, April 10th at 9:30 at Keyboard Connection. Dr. Diana Dumlavwalla will present a program called “Online Music Lessons.” You can read about Dr. Dumlavwalla in Anita’s program notes. As we move into an area of greater technology, giving online music lessons has become a reality. You don’t want to miss this special program.

Also in April, we will vote on our slate of officers for the coming 2 years: President, Anita Renfroe; Vice-President, Sandra Stewart; Treasurer, Lorie Burningham; Secretary, Martha McKie. Be sure to attend and cast your vote.
Please remember the Proton Therapy Institute recital on Tuesday, April 16th. Intermediate level and advanced students are invited to participate. For more information, contact Sandra Stewart. The Proton Therapy recital is a community event, open to the public and can be counted as community service credits. Even if you do not have students participating, you are welcome to attend. This program is always delightful.

It is officially Spring! New life is beginning all around us and warmer days are ahead. Perhaps some of your students would like at attend a summer music camp. We do have scholarships available to help.

Have a Blessed Easter.
Dr. Sandra Roberts
President, JMTA

JMTA General Meeting Minutes
Wednesday, March 13, 2019
Keyboard Connection
  • Members Present: Erin Bennett, Angie Holt, Denise Homsley, Paulette Kilts, Martha McKie, Anita Renfroe, Sandra Roberts, Kamila Shahtakhtinski, Ronald Touchton, John Lansdale
  • Call to Order 9:30 am: Dr. Sandra Roberts, President
  • The Treasurer’s Report, submitted by Lorraine Eaton Sears, was read. The report was accepted and stands as read.
  • Student Recitals: All 3 student recitals have now been held and will resume next school year. Visiting teacher, John Lansdale, asked where JMTA recitals are held and how many students participate. Sandra Roberts explained that each recital is an hour in length, each teacher may present student performances of 15 minutes total, and the music is memorized when the performance is by a student playing an individual solo. Each student performance requires a $5 fee. The first JMTA student recital of 2019-20 academic year is expected to be in October. For more information about JMTA events schedule, refer to www.JaxMTA.org.
  • Scholarship: Kamila Shahtakhtinski reported that the scholarship winner Amy Lao will be in China with her family beginning in April for an extended visit with family and thus is unable to schedule the required public recital this spring. The resulting discussion arrived at the solution of Ms. Lao submitting a well-made video of her recital. Kamila Shahtakhtinski agreed to arrange this. Approval of this plan was carried unanimously in a vote by members present.
  • Social: Anita Renfroe, Sandra Roberts, and Angie Holt brought pastries, fruit, and breakfast casserole for refreshments.
  • Proton Therapy Recital: The date of 2019 Proton Therapy Recital is April 16th at 6:00-7:30 p.m. The location is the UF Health Proton Therapy Institute, 2015 N Jefferson St, Jacksonville, FL 32206. Students performing are Intermediate or Advanced. It is a public recital and all are invited to attend.
  • Internet Lessons: Ron Touchton asked if others in the group provide lessons via internet. Anita Renfroe stated that she has an internet student. At the April meeting a guest presenter will be speaking about internet lessons.
  • Student Day: Denise Homsley reported 48 students and 10 teachers participated in Student Day 2019. All 13 levels were represented for the first time this year. The Honors Recital presented 14 performers on March 17 at 3:00 p.m. at UNF. (Congratulations and Thank You Denise for leading this worthwhile accomplishment!)
  • Northeast Florida Conservatory: Kamila Shahtakhtinski requested that JMTA send thank you notes to NE FL Conservatory office manager and executive director. Kamila will email names and addresses to Denise Homsley.
  • Nominating Committee: Lynn Freeman led the installation of new officers. The slate of new officers nominated are Anita Renfroe as President, Sandra Roberts as Vice President, Lori Burningham as Treasurer, and Martha McKie as Secretary. All nominees were unanimously approved.
  • River Garden Hebrew Home: River Garden has invited JMTA teachers to hold performances in their auditorium. Their location is 11401 Old St Augustine Rd, Jacksonville, FL 32258.
  • After the meeting, this month’s presentation was a sampling from a Lecture Recital originally performed earlier this season by Anita Boyle Renfroe, DMA. Anita played two solo pieces, “Fantasia in C Major H. XVII/4” composer Haydn and “Papillons Op. 2” composer Schumann. Also, she played a very interesting and amusing piece “Variations on Chopsticks” by Franz Liszt, assisted by her husband, Vance Renfroe EdS. Thank you, Anita, for your beautiful playing!
