President’s Pen
Welcome, fellow music teachers, to the 2017-2018 school year! I trust that you had a refreshing and pleasant summer.

Anita Renfroe has planned exciting and informative programs for our monthly meetings, beginning with our first meeting on Wednesday, September 13 at Keyboard Connection at 9:30 AM. Also, our State Conference is early this year, September 7-10 in Coral Gables, FL. I am excited to be attending and will give you a report at the September meeting.

For your future calendar, our Multi-Piano Festival will be in November 2018. More details will be given at our meetings.
Remember that JMTA exists for the benefit of teachers and students, so come and join us. Let’s see what we can share that will be helpful and encouraging to us and our students.

Blessings,
Dr. Sandra Roberts

CONGRATS!!
Congratulations to JMTA member Kamila Shahtakhtinski on receiving her NCTM Certification!

WELCOME NEW MEMBERS!
We extend warm greetings to three new members: Dr. Nick Curry, Stephanie Batson-Martin, and Regina Torres. Welcome to JMTA!

Dr. Nick Curry is the Associate Professor of Cello at the University of North Florida. At UNF, he also serves as the coordinator of scholarships and admissions for the music department and as the area coordinator for strings. In early 2015, he joined fellow Jacksonville musicians Aurica Duca, violinist, and Clinton Dewing, violinist/violist, as founders of the Lawson Ensemble (www.lawsonensemble.com) to play and promote chamber music in the region and abroad.

He was born in Atlanta, Georgia, and graduated from The Westminster Schools, where his chamber music coaches included Martha Gerschefski and Allan Sandlin. Nick received his Bachelor of Music, cum laude, from Vanderbilt, where he studied with Grace Mihi Bahng. While at Vanderbilt, he served as Professor Bahng’s teaching assistant and was the recipient of the Jean Keller Heard Award for Excellence in string performance. Nick then served as Hans Jorgen Jensen’s teaching assistant for five years at Northwestern University, earning both his Master and Doctor of Music degrees. He also was the teaching assistant to Professor Jensen at the Meadowmount School of Music for four summers. At Northwestern, Nick performed as soloist with the Northwestern Philharmonic Orchestra and won the Northwestern Chamber Music Competition.

Nick’s chamber training includes master classes with the Emerson String Quartet, the Pacifica String Quartet, and the Blair String Quartet. Private studies also included summers in Canada and Italy studying with Harvey Shapiro of Julliard fame. Nick has played concerts in Austria, France, Italy, England, Slovenia, Spain, South Africa, Taiwan and Turkey, and throughout the United States. In April of 2006, he performed as a soloist on National Public Radio (USA) Garrison Keillor’s Prairie Home Companion on the King Amati (ca. 1538) cello. The performance was heard by over 4,000 people live and by approximately four million on radio and can be found on the Prairie Home Companion website archives.

In the summers of 2012 and 2013, Dr. Curry was visiting faculty at the Meadowmount School of Music and was full-time faculty at the Tennessee Valley Music Festival. In 2016, he joined the faculty of the ARIA International Summer Music Academy. He has presented at the ASTA and CMS national conferences; is a sought after clinician and adjudicator; and active with the Florida Chapter of the American String Teachers Association. His research has been printed in the ASTA journal multiple times. In 2017 he founded the first annual Jacksonville Cello Workshop (https://jaxcelloworkshop.org/)

Stefanie Batson-Martin is from Orlando, FL. She went to the University of North Florida and studied flute with Rhonda Cassano, and piano with Dr. Erin Bennett. She currently teaches both instruments privately, and is also an instructor for Music and Arts. Stefanie is the church pianist for Lord of Life Lutheran Church in Ponte Vedra, FL. She has experience as a collaborative pianist, and as a theatre music director for local community theatres. Stefanie also works on the side as a swim instructor for the Brooks Family YMCA.

2018 District IV Student Day
Denise Homsley, Mus.M., NCTM, Chair, District IV Student Activities
  • Planning is underway for the 2018 District IV Student Day! Begin preparing your students to participate in this excellent comprehensive evaluation program. Although the date is not yet secured, it is normally held the end of January/ first part of February. There are four events; three of which are graded. The events for which the student will receive a grade are: Written Theory, Aural Theory, and Audition. There is no grade for the Recital performance (fourth event); however, the Recital is a wonderful opportunity to share a Student Day piece and polish performance skills.
  • An independent teacher in Florida has devised a curriculum to help you prepare your students for the technique, aural theory, and written theory portions of Student Day. The guidelines follow the same leveling and guidelines that is provided in your Student Activities Handbook. Contact information is as follows: Music Master, 4111 NW 79 Ave, Coral Springs, FL 33065,  954-752-2856 (teacher Sue Colvert) jwcsr@aol.com
  • The Student Day Handbook may be found online on the FSMTA website under Student Activities, Non-Competitive. There is no charge to print all, or any portion, of the Handbook.
  • I will be presenting a session on District Student Day at our first JMTA meeting on September 13, at Keyboard Connection. The session, “Student Day Success” will offer ideas for Student Day preparation, as well as the latest news regarding the update for the Student Day Handbook and examinations.
  • Participation in District Student Day really helps advance a student’s music education. While the preparation is comprehensive, the rewards are great! Students, parents, and teachers are all pleased to see the student learn so much about theory and performance. As certificates and medals are awarded to the students, it is exciting for everyone to see the merits of their effort and how much they have progressed. Additionally, students often remark that school music classes are easy because of what they have learned from Student Day.
  • Please plan to join us on September 13th at Keyboard Connection for the informative presentation on “Student Day Success”!!

jaxmta.org Find a Teacher
The “Find a Teacher” section on the website has been recently reorganized. Additional areas of town have been added, which may have caused your listing to move to a different sub-tab. On the main page, all zip codes are listed under which area of town they represent. The actual listings have not changed.
Please review this section of the website and let me know if you find any errors or edits that need to be made.
Thank you.

Check out those shoulder pads!
We’ve had lots of pictures taken over the years. We have some dating back to the 80s! All of our photos and scrapbook pages have been digitally scanned and are available for viewing anytime on the archive page of the state website, fmta.org. All of the physical copies of the old pictures and scrapbooks will be put out for you to take at the next several meetings. Please take a look and keep any pictures you like. Whatever is left will be thrown away.

Music Exchange
Do you have too much music collected in your studio? Is there some you think you’ll never use? Let’s have a music exchange! Bring your unwanted music to any JMTA meeting. Bring home something new to you! Look for the “Free Music” spot. Music does not have to be brand new.
