President’s Pen
This year is flying by, I can’t believe Spring is here already. Only a few more months of school left, and then we are into Summer! I hope everyone had a relaxing and rejuvenating Spring Break. Mine was spent with my daughter in Pensacola visiting my mother and aunt. Grandma was thrilled to see her granddaughter and vice versa. I am also spending time preparing my students for their Spring Recital in May and our upcoming Proton Therapy Recital this coming week. It will be my first time enrolling students in the Proton Therapy Recital and attending it, so I am excited.

Thankfully, we have a full slate of officers to vote on for April, so please prepare to cast a vote at the meeting, or remotely. Additionally, a hearty congratulations to our Concerto Competition winners and competitors and their teachers. I look forward to hearing them perform at our April 12th meeting at JU’s Terry Concert Hall. Many thanks to Dr. Scott Watkins at JU for being able to host us for our April meeting, as Riverside Presbyterian was not able to accommodate us this year. Also, a big thanks to Dr. Erin Bennett for all her hard work on the Concerto Competition.

JMTA Meeting Minutes
March 8, 2016
  • Location: Keyboard Connection – 9912 San Jose Blvd., Jacksonville, FL 32257
Commenced at 9:35 AM
  • Present: Lindsay Hardee, Lorraine Eaton, Anita Renfroe, Denise Homsley, Lynn Freeman, Lorie Burningham, Sandra Roberts, Betty Atkinson, Pam Searcy, Angie Holt
Call to Order (Lindsay Hardee)
Reading of minutes (Lindsay Hardee)
  • Lindsay made a motion to approve the minutes. Seconded and approved.
Vice President of Membership (Sarah)
  • 55 active – provisional, 47, collegiate 8 (I wasn’t sure of these numbers as they were different below.)
Communication (Angie) no report
Treasurer Report (Lorraine)
  • Checks went out to Penny. It was decided to take it out of the Warren Fund, which is down by $50. Membership totals are 47 active members. Check to Denise for active memberships. Line item added for continued education in budget. Stands approved as read.
Service Awards (Sandra Roberts)
  • Sandra tried to contact the state chairman for community service. She stated that we may have to go a few pages back on the website and there may be a working telephone number. Lorraine isn’t sure that the check was cashed. If Amanda didn’t win, then we need to give her a plaque. She is a senior. We should award her community service award at the April meeting. Winner performances will be in April. Can Amanda come to this? Location to be determined. Usually at Riverside. Luncheon information? Joanna Subcowska – did she get check? Not answered.
Internet Media (Lorraine)
  • JMTA manual procedures are going on website. Check link. It’s under the link tab – manual procedures. If you are a committee chairperson or board member, please read over your section and let her know of changes.
Summer Board meeting discussion (Lorraine)
  • Lorraine is updating Google calendar. Can we move the calendar portion to the communications chairperson? Unanswered.
  • Lorraine – this is an election year. We elect board next month and then we will find out when the summer meeting will be. It’s usually early June.
Membership (Angie)
  • has passed her provisional test. She just needs some students evaluated.
Piano Festival (Lindsay)
  • UNF has Saturday the 11th available (Nov. 11). Vote taken, Lindsay okay with participation, Sandra okay with participation, Lorraine not sure. Numbers are already low. We may be trying to force it.
  • Lindsay’s other concerns are if other conductors are available.
  • Sandra Roberts mentioned that festival participation has gone down over the years. Festival music has not been chosen yet. Usually done in April/May.
  • Lindsay moved that we do not hold piano festival this year. Lorraine seconded. Unanimous – motion passed. No piano festival this year.
  • Theme for next year is folk music from around the world. Lindsay will put it in High Notes for suggestions on music. Anita offered to help choose music – primo/secondo duets – all different levels. Sandra Roberts suggested we use ‘Around the World’ as one of the pieces.
2018 is Gainsville Conference (Lindsay)
  • will check and see if our help is required. This year’s conference is in Miami.
Programs (Anita Renfroe)
  • Student recital is in April.
  • Luncheon in May. Riverside Presbyterian church – who is the contact? Just call and talk with their secretary or minister of music. Maybe Sandra Stewart has the information.
  • Anita will contact church about scheduling April meeting – second Wednesday – 9:30 meeting, 10:30 program.
  • May luncheon was in St. John’s Cathedral last year. It was made known that we can’t do it there this year. It was suggested that we look in past minutes to get ideas for where to have luncheon. It has been at Riverside Presbyterian and one year we went to a restaurant. Perhaps a college student could perform at May luncheon. Contact Dr. Bennett about that for suggestions and perhaps she could find a spot at UNF. We could even meet at Keyboard Connection and then go to restaurant close by. (Loop, Carrabbas, Outback?) It was suggested that we keep it simple. Lindsay will call Carrabbas and Outback and ask about reservations? Most in attendance preferred to meet at Keyboard Connection for a performance and then go to a restaurant close by. April concerto – Riverside Presbyterian.
Scholarships
  • No report as Camilla was not in attendance today.
Social (Denise)
  • nothing to report.

DISTRICT:
  • Lorraine – Student Day – waiting on certificates and medals from Denise. March 25 is competition. Are there volunteers for the teacher’s recital for the conference. Lorraine thinks that Camilla may do it. Let Lorraine know if you’re interested.
  • Unfinished business old or new:
  • The nominating committee nominates:
    • Sandra Roberts – President
    • Lorie Burningham – Secretary
    • VP – Lindsay Hardee

District 4 News
  • District 4 is seeking nominations for a new Executive Board. The current board will meet during the summer to name potential candidates. The nominees will be voted on and installed at the next D4 General Meeting (tentatively January 2018). Please consider serving your organization by being a board member. D4 events and meetings generally take place less often than JMTA events and meetings, so this is a good way to be involved with less of a time commitment. If you are interested in serving in a position, or would like to know more, please contact D4 President Lorraine Eaton.
  • Executive Board positions to be filled:
    • President
    • Vice President
    • Recording Secretary
    • Treasurer

Community Recital
  • The Community Recital will be held on Tuesday, April 4, at the University of Florida Health Proton Therapy Institute, 2015 N. Jefferson St., Jacksonville, 32216, at 6:00pm.
  • This recital is for intermediate and advanced students only. Students can earn community service hours. Contact Dr. Sandra Stewart for further inquiry.
