President’s Pen
March has come, along with the time for me to announce I will be resigning as JMTA President at the end of this fiscal year. It has been my pleasure to be an active member of JMTA since 2004 and an MTNA member since 1976.
During those years, I have enjoyed meeting and working with many JMTA members and hearing the development of the musical students of our teacher members. Since my husband retired last summer, our plan has been to travel starting in the summer of 2016 and see where our next mission takes us.

The procedure for continued leadership in JMTA will include nominees for President being announced by the Nominating committee at the March JMTA meeting, an election for a President to serve a one-year term taking place in the month of April at the JMTA meeting and installation of that President at the May JMTA meeting. Transfer of leadership will be completed by the end of June.
I know that the membership will be there to support the next President assuring that the many programs JMTA provides for teachers and students will continue to flourish.

I look forward to seeing you at the March JMTA meeting and the program that will follow as well as at other JMTA events during the next few months.
Paulette Kilts, JMTA President

2016 District IV Student Day
Denise Homsley, Mus.M., NCTM, Chair, District IV Student Activities

District IV Student Day was held Saturday, February 6, 2016 on the campus of Jacksonville University. Heartfelt thanks is extended to Dr. Henry Rinne, Dean, College of Fine Arts, and our site coordinator Dr. Scott Watkins, Associate Professor of Piano, Coordinator of Keyboard Studies, and to Jacksonville University itself for the gracious use of the campus.

Fifteen JMTA teachers enrolled 86 students to participate in this year’s Student Day. Many thanks to our adjudicators: Joan Cordell, Dr. Michael Mastronicola, Dr. Sandra Stewart, and JohnWillard Utuk. Your expertise and helpful comments are so appreciated!

Appreciation is also sincerely extended to the following for their assistance with the administration of Student Day: Betty Atkinson, Dr. Erin Bennett, Lorraine Eaton, Lindsay Hardee, Anne Marie Giffin, Nikki Groff, Sarah Hartley, Paulette Kilts, Hiromi Nasife, Laura Peden, Dr. Jeannie Rose. Many thanks, as well, to Dan Kilts and Mark Homsley for their assistance at Student Day.

Many students qualified to participate in the Honors Recital, held on Sunday, February 14, 2016, at Christian Family Chapel. Thirty-one students performed a selection from their Student Day repertoire. After the performance, each was given a Certificate of Excellence for receiving Honors on their Audition, and Honors or Achievement on their Theory exams.

Thank you everyone for making this year’s Student Day very successful!! We look forward to 2017 District IV Student Day!

DISTRICT IV MEMBER’S RECITAL
  • If you are interested in performing at the District IV Member’s Recital, please send your repertoire and performance time to: Michael Mastronicola, mastronicola@yahoo.com
  • Deadline is April 1st. Call or email 904-402-6480 with questions.
  • The recital will be presented as part of All Saints Episcopal Church’s Music Through the Ages Concert Series on Sunday, April 17, at 6 pm.
  • Location is 4171 Hendricks Avenue, Jacksonville, FL 32207.
  • Admission is free.
  • A reception organized by the church will follow in the Parish Hall, but members are asked to bring a dish (brownies, crackers & cheese, etc) if able to assist.
  • Details will be sent to members in the weeks before the recital for a sign-up.
  • All members are expected to share postings and invites to this recital to friends and their studios.
  • The recital will last no more than 80 minutes, no intermission. Performers must be District IV members in good standing.
  • Performances should be of high quality, and consist of solo piano rep and collaborative repertoire. If you plan to perform with another person, please plan to visit the performance space and figure out logistics beforehand. The performance space is tight!
  • Selections must be under 10 minutes (shorter pieces are welcome!), allowing for a minimum of 8 performers; more may perform based on repertoire length. 10 minutes is an absolute maximum!
  • The piano, a Yamaha 6’11” grand, is currently in the rear of the sanctuary; it will be moved to the front of the sanctuary that afternoon. Because of this, there will not be warm-up time before April 17th. Warm-up time is available from 3-5 pm, 10-15 minutes per performer. Let Michael know your preference if you would like a time slot that Sunday.
  • An offering plate will be at the welcome table. Half the offering will go to the Music Fund at the church to assist with ongoing Concert Series costs; half will be donated to District IV JMTA. Performers will be included on a “first response” basis.
