President’s Pen
Dear Colleagues:

Choice Spring Greetings! It hardly seems possible that we are at the end of another school year. Thank you to Anita Renfroe for arranging the fine April program about long-distance music teaching. There are so many teaching innovations that were not available a few years ago.

National, State and Local membership dues for the 2019-2020 year are now due. Be sure to renew so you don’t miss out on the happenings in the music-teaching community.

Our final meeting for this spring will be Wednesday, May 8 at 9:30 AM at Keyboard Connection. We will have the installation of our new officers. The program will be the music of our Concerto Competition winners, followed by lunch at Carrabba’s Restaurant nearby. All members are invited to attend this special meeting!

Please mark your calendar for the FSMTA Conference on October 17-20, 2019, at the Hilton University of Florida Conference Center in Gainesville, FL. We are privileged to have this year’s conference in “our backyard,” so to speak. It behooves us to take advantage of the close distance and check out the wonderful program. Watch for registration time and requests for help. I look forward to seeing you all there.

Many thanks to Sandra Stewart for organizing the Proton Therapy Institute Community Recital. Everyone enjoyed an evening of “classy” music from student performers. What a joy!

Our grateful appreciation to Jack Melvin for opening the doors of Keyboard Connection for our monthly meetings. Jack is a real gem!

This is my final President’s Letter. It has been my honor to serve as President of this fine professional organization. A HUGE “THANK YOU” to all officers and chairpersons who worked with me these past two years. I appreciate you! Because of your work, JMTA is a blessing to students and teachers.

God bless,
Dr. Sandra Roberts
President, JMTA

JMTA General Meeting Minutes
Wednesday, April 10, 2019
Keyboard Connection
  • Members Present: Betty Atkinson, Erin Bennett, Lynn Freeman, Angie Holt, Martha McKie, Anita Refroe, Maureen Rhodes, Sandra Roberts, Lorraine Eaton Sears, Sandy Stewart, JohnWillard Utuk
  • Call to Order 9:35 am: Dr. Sandra Roberts, President
  • Treasurer’s Report: Lorraine Eaton distributed copies of the Treasurer’s Report. Lorraine reminded us that anyone who needs to be reimbursed for expenses submit requests as soon as possible. She added that all checks need to be cashed before the end of June.
  • Secretary Minutes: President Dr. Sandra Roberts read the minutes of the last meeting. Paulette Kilts asked that a correction of the March 2019 Minutes be changed to read “the slate of new officers was presented.”
  • Communications: Angie Holt reminded us that the May High Notes will be the last issue of the school year and will start up again the first of September.
  • Archivist/Historian/Internet Media: The website has been renewed to continue until September. Lorraine Eaton Sears proposed a solution to the need for the JMTA website to be made easier to update by moving to a new provider. Lorraine consulted with Amy Turon who suggested either Square Space or Weebly as good providers which don’t require coding. The cost is $4-8 per month. Amy offered that she would be available to move the current website to Weebly. Her charge would be characterized as a gratuity, and Amy did not state a specific charge for the work. Lorraine outlined avenues she would investigate to make a determination of a fair amount to pay Amy for the technical work.
  • Programs: Anita Renfroe announced the final program of the year, May 2019, will be this year’s Concerto Winners. After the program members will have the end of year lunch. Le Petit Paris, located across the street from our meeting location, Keyboard Connection, was proposed for the luncheon. Sandy Stewart suggested that we invite Jack Melvin to join us for lunch, and that we give him a gift certificate to show our gratitude for hosting JMTA meetings throughout the year. The funds for the luncheon would come from the Altruistic budget. Denise Holmes offered to make the arrangements for the lunch reservation. Anita Renfroe moved that JMTA members approve the end of year luncheon arrangements as described, including the gift to Jack. Maureen Rhodes seconded the motion and it was passed. Sandy Stewart agreed to get the gift certificate and suggested we give it to Jack before going to lunch.
  • Scholarship: The video of this year’s scholarship winner, student of Kamila Shahtakhtinski, will be arranged by Kamila. Anita will call Kamila to confirm arrangements. Lorraine said that Kamila has stated that she will provide the video.
  • Student Recital: The JMTA Community Recital (Proton Therapy Recital) – Sandy Stewart expressed the concern that The Proton Therapy Recital needs more performers and encouraged all to assign their best students to perform at the event.
  • Voting on Nominees for new officers: The candidates are Anita Renfroe for President, Sandra Stewart for Vice President, Lorie Burningham for Treasurer, and Martha McKie for Secretary. Lynn Freeman announced these as the candidates, adding that a quorum is not necessary in this process. The slate of candidates was passed unanimously. The Installation of the new officers will take place at the May 2019 meeting.
  • New Business: JohnWillard Utuk announced the Harmony Book Workshop for grades 9-12 would like up to 4 performers. The date is June 10, 2019. The cost is $25 per student. Teachers who would like to attend are asked to bring refreshments. The location is listed at LilyMusicStudio.com.
  • Angie Holt visited the River Garden senior center to find out more about the possibility of JMTA teachers holding recitals there. River Garden will provide punch and cake. There is no charge to our teachers to present recitals at this venue, though they welcome donations.

2019 JMTA HSS Scholarship
  • 2019 JMTA High School Senior Scholarship auditions were held on Saturday, March 9, 2019 at 9:00 A.M. at the Northeast Florida Conservatory. The judge was Dr. Jeriel Gilmer. Applicant Amy Lao, student of Mary Lou Krosnick, performed a program of three contrasting pieces from different periods and was declared the winner of the 2019 JMTA High School Senior Scholarship. She was presented with a check in the amount of $1000 of established scholarship money by committee chair Kamila Shahtakhtinski, NCTM. Since Amy Lao cannot be present at the JMTA meeting for family reasons she produced the video recording of her program, which will be presented to membership at the JMTA May 8, 2019 meeting at the Keyboard Connection.

Dear JMTA members,
I’d like to invite you and any of your high school students to a Masterclass/workshop I’ll be presenting in collaboration with fellow teacher Lisa Barwell of Lily Music Studio. The date is Monday June 10th, from 6-8pm. Location is in the Arlington area, near the Publix on corner of Merrill and Townsend. Attached are flyers you can pass along to students/parents/teachers who also may be interested.

The “Mindset, Mindfulness, & Imagination” class/workshop will address musician issues of performance anxiety, practice techniques, mental health/confidence, and music career aspects. This will be a highly interactive experience, with room for questions (& A), personal reflections, and a unique composing activity that all attendees (not just performers) will get to experience.
  • This masterclass is for high school piano students, (grades 9-12) although teachers may join them if interested. Parents are requested to drop their students off or may wait outside.
  • Up to 4 performers will be selected from applications; repertoire to be played should be at an intermediate to advanced level. Memorization is highly encouraged, but not mandatory.
  • Cost is $25; food will be provided
  • Teacher don’t have to pay the fee, rather a small plate of food/snacks is payment
Lisa and I are hoping this event provides a unique perspective for students regarding their piano studies, finding ways for them to feel better about going after their music & life goals, and to spark creativity and motivation alongside their peers.

Students/Teachers can enroll here

Please address any additional questions to Lisa at fluteteacher@live.com. Here’s a blog post about ideas that will be shared to pass on to your students, as well.
Thank you,
JohnWillard Utuk

Music Exchange
Do you have too much music collected in your studio? Is there some you think you’ll never use? Let’s have a music exchange! Bring your unwanted music to any JMTA meeting. Bring home something new to you! Look for the “Free Music” spot. Music does not have to be brand new.
