President’s Pen
Greetings Everyone:
Many thanks to Anita Renfroe for the September program. Our 2018-2019 school year is off to a great start! We had a delightful time munching on goodies and listening to holiday music. October’s program will continue the presentation of holiday (any holiday) music gems. Please attend and share your favorite holiday selection(s). Check Anita’s post in the High Notes for future programs.
Thanks to Maureen Rhodes for volunteering to be our new Ethics Chairperson; also to Martha McKie for filling the Secretary’s position. We appreciate these ladies’ willingness to help JMTA. We are still in need of a Historian. The job is not time consuming. Would anyone volunteer to fill this spot? Please let me know ASAP.

By the time of the October meeting, I will be home from the FSMTA Conference in Coral Gables. I will have a report about the business meeting and the workshops. We are so pleased that our own Kamila Shahtakhtinski will be one of the featured performers. I look forward to this time of continuing education and fellowship. I am driving alone to Coral Gables. Please keep me in your prayers for a safe journey.

Our appreciation goes to Jack Melvin for his hosting our JMTA meetings.
See you on October 10th!

Blessings,
Dr. Sandra Roberts
JMTA President

JMTA General Meeting Minutes
Wednesday, September 12, 2018
Keyboard Connection
Present:
  • Angie Holt, Kayma Rasmussen-Li, Sandy Stewart, Denise Homsley, Lynn Freeman, Betty Atkinson, Kamila Shahtakhtinski, Maureen Rhodes, Lynn Roberts, Anita Renfroe, Sandra Roberts, John Utuk, Erin Bennett, Martha McKie
Call to Order 9:30 am: Dr. Sandra Roberts, President
  • (Parliamentarian)
  • Secretary Minutes: Martha McKie volunteered to take minutes.
  • Treasurer’s Report. It was reported that the deposit from Trinity was made by Lorraine Eaton. Accepted.
  • Altruistic. Denise Homsley reported that Sandra Roberts had an unexpectedly lengthy recovery period from her surgery. Sandra made a heartfelt statement that the encouraging card Denise sent was very much appreciated.
  • Angie stated that the 20th of each month is the deadline for submissions to the High Notes. Also, an Ethics reporter and a Historian is still needed.
  • Piano Festival. Sandra Roberts reported that the Multi Piano Festival has been cancelled until further notice. The level of funds needed has not been sufficient to cover the expense. Douglas Anderson school has been “picking up the slack”. Lindsay Hardee resigned as chairperson. Betty Atkinson remarked that the announcement was sudden and left no lead time to inform students who have been preparing for Piano Festival. Sandy Stewart added that DA also wished for more lead time. Erin suggested a smaller event for duet partners. Betty suggested that JMTA recitals could include some duet submissions.
  • Programs. Anita Renfroe proposed programs for this year.
    • October: Continue with Holiday music. “Holiday” could mean any season. Need volunteers for October, which could possibly include advanced students, perhaps suggestions from Vera Anderson. Other upcoming program suggestions follow. Erin reminded that college students have schedule conflict with the time of JMTA meeting.
    • November: The November meeting will be a week earlier than usual. Possible pieces presented by Betty’s duet students who had begun preparation for the now-cancelled Multi Piano event, if November works for Betty’s students. Begin program at 9:30 a.m. with meeting after.
    • February meeting: Erin will present.
    • March: Guest presenter Anthony Butler, a business consultant, will discuss ideas for small business owners.
    • April: Guest Dr. Diana Dinwalla. The topic has not yet been announced.
  • Scholarship. Kamila has no further news as yet, and added that a deadline is needed. Erin stated that the date will be March 23 or 24.
  • October Student Recital, per Sandy Stewart, will be on October 28th at Shepherd of the Woods. The starting time is 2:00 pm, which is an hour earlier than the usual recital starting time.
  • Martha McKie will be Secretary and District Secretary in February.
  • Maureen Rhodes will lead Ethics Committee work.
  • Fees for outside presenters (per Anita Renfroe). Each of the two presenters for this year will be paid $100. (Warren fund?) The proposed budget as printed has annual total at $75. It needs to be $200 to cover the presentations already planned. Anita will check with Lorraine.
  • Sandra stated that the Student Recital expenses were sufficiently covered at $75, as it appears in the current budget.
  • Denise stated that Student Day is not on February 2. January 26th or February 9th are the probable dates. Updated Workbooks will be available at the October Conference. The additions will probably be supplemental pages. The new information is available online at the MTNA website The upper levels are still in process. Kayma says the pieces are online.
  • Kayma reminded that Gainesville is hosting for Jax/G’ville October 17-20 2019. Using the medical community: music meets medicine. The logo is ready. A grant has been received. Joint Master Class. Concert: Louis and Julie Nagel. Topic: “Performance Anxiety”. The Hilton rate is $139 per night.

JMTA OCTOBER MEETING
Dear JMTA members,

We will continue to share some of our favorite holiday teaching pieces for our October program as well. Several members could not stay for the September meeting and we hope all will be able to stay and share some proven holiday winners at the October program. Remember these pieces may be for Halloween, Thanksgiving, Valentine’s Day, etc… You decide and bring a few to share. Solos, duets and trios are welcome. We all love to make music together.
I will compile a list and categorize it to send out to each of you following the October meeting. Please provide the names of the pieces, composer/arranger, publisher and approximate level (primer, elementary, intermediate, advanced).
See you at Keyboard Connection, 9912 San Jose Blvd., October 10th at 9:30 am.
Perhaps you would like to invite someone to join you.

Anita Renfroe

JMTA Treasurer Needed
This spring will be nominating and election time for the new set of board members. Board members are installed in May, and serve a term of two years. They may be re-elected for a second term.

A hard position to fill is Treasurer. Lorraine Eaton is on her second term as Treasurer, so we need someone willing to be nominated for the role. It is not very time consuming, about 2 hours of time per month. Yes, there is a lot of bookkeeping to keep up with, but there are also detailed notes in the Manual of Procedures on how to accomplish all this. You would just need to stay organized and on top of it. Please consider taking on this position for the coming term. If you have any more detailed questions on what the position entails, please contact Lorraine. You would also be trained on how to do everything before it just being handed over to you.

This is an important position in our organization, and we need each and every member to help out so JMTA can run smoothly.

DISTRICT IV NEWS
2019 District IV Student Day
Denise Homsley, Mus.M., NCTM, Chair, District IV Student Activities
  • 2019 District IV Student Day is in the planning process. Please watch for the date and venue to be announced!
  • In the meantime, the new Student Day guidelines may be found on the fmta.org website. There are a few changes at each level, so please go over these with your students as they prepare.
  • It is my understanding the Music Masters worksheets, covering the updated requirements, will be available at the upcoming FSMTA Conference. At each level, the worksheets will be an addendum to the current workbooks.
We look forward to 2019 District IV Student Day! It should be another very successful District Student Day!!

Music Exchange
Do you have too much music collected in your studio? Is there some you think you’ll never use? Let’s have a music exchange! Bring your unwanted music to any JMTA meeting. Bring home something new to you! Look for the “Free Music” spot. Music does not have to be brand new.
